Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School to Honor Mark D. Lerner for His Support of the Jewish and Washington-Area Communities

Rockville-based Jewish day school will launch region-wide day of community service on June 5

Rockville, MD, May 14, 2007 – The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School will present its prestigious Chadesh Yameinu Award to Washington Nationals Baseball Club Principal Owner Mark D. Lerner at its Spring Celebration 2007 on June 4, 2007, the school announced today. Spring Celebration 2007 will also launch the School’s first-ever “Lerner Family Students in Action Day,” to be held the following day on June 5, 2007.  This school-wide effort will feature over 1300 students involved with service organizations across the entire Washington, D.C. region.

“I am proud to be honored by a School that has meant so much to me and my family, and I am thrilled that we can partner with the School on Lerner Family Students in Action Day,” said Mark D. Lerner, Principal of Lerner Enterprises and Principal Owner of the Washington Nationals.  “Demonstrating our commitment to giving back to the community is important to our family, and we look forward to working alongside CESJDS students as they engage in this exciting and powerful opportunity.”

“Academic preparation and character development are integral components of the educational program at CESJDS,” said Jonathan Cannon, CESJDS Head of School. “This multi-faceted education – grounded in the finest general studies programs and rigorous Judaic studies – enriches the students’ experience, engages them in the greater society around them via community service, and grounds them with the tools needed to become successful, contributing members of the wider Jewish and American communities.”

On June 5, students in all grades will work alongside service organizations from across the area to make an impact on many communities. Projects will include making sandwiches and snacks for homeless shelters, planting and gardening in parks, and connecting with senior citizens. Organizations such as the Montgomery County Humane Society, the DC Central Kitchen, and Friends of the National Zoo are partnering with CESJDS in these worthwhile community service projects.

One of the larger activities will involve fifth- and eighth-grade students working alongside Mr. Lerner and players from the Washington Nationals, in partnership with the Earth Conservation Corps, to clean up the Anacostia River and plant trees along the river banks. Students from Kimball Elementary School located in the District of Columbia will join with CESJDS students on the Anacostia River project.

Mark D. Lerner is a Principal of Lerner Enterprises, the real estate development, management, and investment company founded by his father, Theodore N. Lerner in 1952.
